This is an interactive timeline of Black Toronto from the nineteenth to the end of the twentieth century. I used the open source program, TimeMapper to add text, pictures, and videos to my dataset.
I believe it is important to start with NECROPOLIS, which is a cemetery east of the downtown core in Cabbagetown. It is also where many prominent Black men and women are interred, such as William Peyton Hubbard and Thornton and Lucie Blackburn. I want to acknowledge a long history of Blackness on this land... in every incarnation before the twentieth century.
Data for this exhibit comes from the same dataset used on the CARTO map.
