This is an interactive timeline of Black Toronto from the nineteeth to the end of the twentieth century. I used the open source program, TimeMapper to add text, pictures, and videos to my dataset.
I believe it is important to start with NECROPOLIS, which is a cemetery east of the downtown core. It is where many prominent people are buried, including some of the first black people who settled in Toronto, includng William Peyton Hubburd and Thornton and Lucie Blackburn . I want to acknowledge that there is a long history of blackness on this land... in every incarnation before the twentieth century.
Data for this exhibit comes from the same dataset used on the CARTO map.
